fresh voices from the front lines of change

They Will Try

Federal court to hear government plea to reinstate travel ban. WaPo: “…government lawyers will try to persuade a federal appeals court to reinstate President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban — and once again, they can expect plenty of questions Monday about whether the ban was designed to discriminate against Muslims. A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has scheduled arguments in Seattle over Hawaii’s lawsuit challenging the travel ban, which would suspend the nation’s refugee program and temporarily bar new visas for citizens of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.”

NJ Rep. Frelinghuysen targets activist at her workplace. WNYC: “The most powerful congressman in New Jersey, Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, wrote a fundraising letter in March to the board member of a local bank, warning him that a member of an activist group opposing the Republican worked at his bank…The employee was questioned and criticized for her involvement in NJ 11th for Change, a group that formed after the election of Donald Trump and has been pressuring Frelinghuysen to meet with constituents in his district and oppose the Trump agenda.”

White supremacist leads torchlit VA demonstration to oppose removal of Confederate statue. CBS: “A group… carried torches and chanted ‘you will not replace us’ at a Saturday evening protest in Virginia over plans to remove a monument of a Confederate general. Chanting “Russia is our friend,” the group lit torches at Lee Park – named after the general – in an effort, protesters said, to preserve European-American heritage.”

But We Will Resist

Federal ethics office scrutinizing Trump appointees. NPR: “When the Senate was preparing to confirm President Trump’s Cabinet and other top officials, the nominees negotiated ethics agreements, promising to rearrange their financial lives to avoid conflicts of interest. Now the Office of Government Ethics wants to know if they kept their word. OGE is requiring the Cabinet secretaries and other Senate-confirmed officials to fill out a new Certification of Ethics Agreement Compliance.”

Federal immigration agent looking for 4th grader blocked from entering NYC school. Mic: “An officer from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services was denied entry Thursday to an elementary school in Queens, New York, when they arrived looking for a fourth-grade student… A school safety agent and administrator turned the agent away when they arrived at Public School 58 without a warrant.”

This Mother’s Day, Help Black Mamas Get Free. Xoai Pham: “A new national campaign is bringing Black mothers home from jail and seeking to end the injustices of money bail, which incarcerates many just for being poor. Thousands of mothers are sitting in jails before even having been convicted of a crime. Now Black-led groups are working together to bring these mothers home to their families.”

Donald Trump Is Waging a War on Workers. Bob Borosage: “On almost every measure, Trump is making life worse for the working class. His stunts and boasts claim credit for new jobs, but these stunts cover the reality: Trump is shafting the very working people who supported him.”

The ACA Is a Matter or Life or Death for Our Family. Ed Weberman: “The Affordable Care Act is a matter or life or death for our family. After being rushed to the emergency room two years ago, my son was diagnosed with lymphoma. He was 22. Because of the ACA, he had insurance and got treatment, which saved his life… I started attending meetings and speaking up. My son also started speaking up. We all believe, now more than ever, that health care is a human right.”
