Federal Judge Throws Out Texas Voter ID Law

Federal judge tosses out Texas voter ID law supported by Trump administration. LA Times: “A federal judge struck down Texas’ controversial voter identification law Wednesday, ruling that it illegally discriminated against Latinos and African Americans. The decision also raised the possibility that the federal government would start overseeing the state’s voting procedures. U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos of Corpus Christi said the state’s attempts to require voters to present certain forms of identification at polling places — ostensibly to curtail voter fraud — were meant to discriminate against minorities and violated the Constitution and the 1965 Voting Rights Act.”

Texas Lawmakers Protest Immigration Law

Bipartisan Latino lawmakers slam Texas’ pending SB4 immigration law. NBC: “It may be remarkable to hear Republicans and Democrats agree on anything in the politically charged environment of 2017. But in an unusual show of solidarity across state and partisan lines, a group of politicians both in and outside of Texas took to the phone on Wednesday to blast the state’s pending Senate Bill 4 legislation. SB 4 is often described in political shorthand as a ‘show me your papers law. Gov. Greg Abbott has said the law will protect public safety by banning sanctuary cities, which regulate how police conduct immigration checks. SB4 will prohibit local authorities from ‘materially limiting’ the ability of a law enforcement or court officer from checking a person’s immigration status and reporting it to federal authorities.”

Sheriff Joe’s Record

Why Joe Arpaio was found guilty. CNN: “He flouted the Constitution. He disobeyed court orders. And then he bragged about it. To understand the building outrage, particularly among civil rights groups, over the possibility that President Donald Trump would pardon former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, one need only return to the July criminal contempt decision against him. It followed a decade-long case against the sheriff for racial-profiling practices in Arizona, during which Arpaio was ordered to stop targeting Latinos for traffic stops and detention. ‘Not only did (Arpaio) abdicate responsibility, he announced to the world and to his subordinates that he was going to continue business as usual no matter who said otherwise,’ wrote US District Judge Susan Bolton in the July 31 order finding Arpaio guilty of criminal contempt.”

Phoenix Protests

Trump’s False claim that there weren’t too many people protesting his Phoenix rally. PolitiFact: “The president’s narrative was at odds with what TV news viewers had seen for hours leading up to Trump taking the stage. The coverage on national networks showed sizeable crowds out on the streets carrying signs criticizing the president and his response to the Charlottesville, Va., riots ignited by supporters of white supremacist and anti-Semitic groups. The Phoenix Police Chief also said there were “tens of thousands” of people out on the streets.”

Trump’s Lawyers Sue Greenpeace

Trump’s Lawyers Sue Greenpeace Over Dakota Pipeline. AlterNet: “Energy Transfer Partners, the owner of the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), has sued Greenpeace and other environmental groups in a $300 million racketeering case, accusing them of inciting terrorism, fraud and defamation and violating state and federal RICO laws… ETP is represented by the law firm Kasowitz, Benson & Torres LLP. Partner Marc Kasowitz is a member of the legal team representing the president in the ongoing congressional and special counsel investigation into possible collusion between Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russian state actors. This is the second consecutive year Trump’s attorneys have filed a lawsuit against Greenpeace.”

After Bannon, Do Hawks Rule the Roost? Miles Mogulescu: “For all the harm Steve Bannon has done, he was right to point out that there’s no military solution to North Korea. After Bannon, one has to wonder who will dare suggest anything other than military solutions to Trump.”
