GOP Doesn't Know How To Respond On Immigration
Republicans struggle with shutdown possibility in wake of expected immigration action. The Hill: "A high-ranking Senate GOP leader on Sunday left the door open to a government shutdown if President Obama moves forward with unilateral action on immigration reform. Asked by 'Fox News Sunday' host Chris Wallace if Republicans would 'take the bait' and shut down the government, Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) said 'it doesn’t solve the problem, Chris, but look, we’re having those discussions.'"
Threat of deportation hurting immigrant families. NYT profiles one: [Sara] Martinez ... sent her older daughter to live with friends in another state because she feared the girl would be discovered by immigration officials and deported. Ms. Martinez and her husband faced deportation themselves in 2011, after being apprehended by a border patrol agent during a family trip to Rochester. As their daughters watched in shock, they were led away in handcuffs and detained for a day before being released. Their marriage did not survive, crumbling under the constant stress of living illegally in this country, Ms. Martinez said. Now it is just Ms. Martinez and her younger daughter in a rundown, three-bedroom apartment furnished with hand-me-downs from friends and Craigslist."
Keystone Vote Tomorrow
Senate to vote on Keystone Tuesday. National Journal: "...for Keystone to pass in the Senate, proponents will need to attract 15 Democrats to their side (all 45 Senate Republicans have pledged to support the measure). And they appear to be close. The 14 Democrats have indicated that they will support the Keystone bill. And Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., who is leading her conference's efforts to pass the measure, said Thursday that she was sure they would have the votes. If the bill does not pass on Tuesday, the new Republican majority expects to take it up early next year, when far fewer Democratic crossovers will be needed and passage appears likely."
Grist's Ben Adler slams Senate Dems for allowing vote: "Senate Democrats seem to be under the false impression that Louisiana voters really and truly care about the Keystone XL pipeline and desperately want it to be built, even though it wouldn’t even go through their state. Moreover, Democrats think Louisiana voters are paying close enough attention to the Senate to know that this vote occurs."
Protesters will put inflatable pipeline in Sen. Landrieu's yard reports CNN.
G20 Pledges To Boost Economy
G20 plans on stimulus. Bloomberg: "Group of 20 leaders agreed to take measures that would boost their economies by a collective $2 trillion by 2018 as they battle patchy growth and the threat of a European recession ... Action to bolster growth comes as policies around the world are diverging with the U.S. tapering its monetary easing as it boasts the strongest economy among advanced nations, while Europe and Japan add further stimulus to ward off deflation."
Steven Rattner explains why inequality keeps getting worse, in NYT oped: "...our taxes, while progressive, are low by international standards and our social welfare programs — ranging from unemployment benefits to disability insurance to retirement payments — are consequently less generous ..."
Dems prepare to run against Ryan budget. Bloomberg: "Representative Chris Van Hollen of Maryland [said], '...I think there will be tremendous pressure for Republicans to pass a virtually identical version, and with Republicans in control of the Senate it's hard to see how they duck that issue. Bottom line is, they're now firing with real budget bullets and I do believe their budget does great harm to lots of people in this country. It's going to be a wake-up call to the public.'"
