Mississippi Republican Sen. Thad Cochran defeated primary challenger Chris McDaniel with the help of black Democrats, and the tea party exploded with rage. Now, to quote Nina Simone, “Everybody Knows About Mississippi, Goddam!”
It all started strangely enough. The Republican primary for Mississippi’s senate seat became a blip on the national radar screen when conservative blogger Clayton Kelley was arrested for breaking into a nursing home and photographing the wife Mississippi Republican Sen. Thad Cochran. Kelley was a supporter of Cochran’s tea party challenger Chris McDaniel, and his arrest caused McDaniel to face some uncomfortable questions. At least three more people, included a board member of the local tea party were arrested.
All that was nothing compared to what was to come. Pushed into a run-off with McDaniel, Cochran beat back McDaniel with help from the last people anyone would have expected — black Democrats.
Cochran figured out that Mississippi’s open primary voting would allow black Democratic voters to participate in the GOP’s primary runoff with McDaniel. And, as Jamelle Bouie wrote, black Mississippi voters had already figured out McDaniel for the reactionary throwback that he is, and opted for the “devil they know” over the one they didn’t need to know any more about.
Conservative heads exploded:
- McDaniel’s supporters sent “election observers” to intimidate black voters out of supporting Cochran. It didn’t work.
- It probably didn’t help that Chris McDaniel campaigned with a guy famous for claiming that Obama is a "Manchurian Candidate" working as part of a secret plan to "destroy the country."
- McDaniel refused to concede, laid into the GOP for “abandoning the conservative movement,” and raged about black voters.
- Sean Hannity declared Thad Cochran “out of touch” and urged his fans not to support the “despicable” incumbent in the general election.
- Sarah Palin whined to Hannity, “If Republicans are going to act like Democrats, then what’s the point?”
- Rush Limbaugh said that “Black Uncle Tom voters” helped Cochran win.
- Glenn Back got so mad he shot off a rifle in the middle of taping his show, and compared McDaniel’s loss to “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”
- Tea partiers may write-in McDaniel’s name in the general election.

One can only hope that, in addition to learning English, these new Americans will drop their soccer fetish with time.”
- WorldNetDaily columnist Carl Jackson got in on the action, writing that the World Cup is a left-wing plot to “bring America down.”
- Fox News contributor Keith Albow suspects the World Cup is a craze is designed designed as a “distraction” for president Obama.
- Conservative columnist Michael Taube has the answer to the controversy surrounding the name of Washington’s professional football franchise: name the team after Ronald Reagan.
- Ben Carson explained to the couple thousand people who showed up for the “March for Marriage” that gay marriage is a Marxist plot to “divide and conquer” Americans in order to impose the “New World Order.” Nonetheless, Carson has devised a compromise on gay marriage: Don’t let gays get married.
- Virginia Republicans would do just about anything to keep 400,000 Virginians from getting Medicaid coverage: including breaking into the governor’s office.
