Here’s a basic rule of thumb for wingnut rhetoric. If right-wingers have returned to flogging that dead horse called Benghazi, they’re fresh out of ideas again. This week, wingnuts weren’t just beating a dead horse. They were almost making glue.
Maybe they got the idea from Fox News contributor Alan West, who assured America that the racism of Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling was indeed terrible, but not as terrible as Benghazi.

It got worse from there, once a White House email that revealed nothing new got things rolling.
- Fox News used the email as an excuse to take a victory lap for its shoddy coverage, accused the White House of a “conspiracy,” and called for special investigation.
- Bill O’Reilly resurrected the discounted myth that President Obama never ordered the military to assist in Benghazi.
- Sen. Lindsey Graham (R, South Carolina) called White House officials “scumbags,” after a suggestion that he only cares about Benghazi because he has six tea part opponents. Of course, there were at least 10 attacks on U.S. embassies under Republican administrations that Graham didn’t care nearly as much about.
- Rep. Daryl Issa (R, Calif.) compared the Obama administration to the Nixon administration, for it’s alleged “cover-up.”
That wasn’t quite enough to get everyone aboard. Even Fox News’ Ed Henry admitted that Benghazi “shouldn’t come up every day if there’s not new information.”
Unfortunately that’s not enough to put Henry on the same page as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D, Calif.), who asked the question on everyone else’s mind: “Benghazi, Benghazi, Benghazi. Why aren’t we talking about something else?”
Here’s the rest of the best of the worst in wingnuttia this week:
- Fox News contributor Angela McGlowan said that poor people “have a slave mentality.”
- According to the Oath Keepers, a rumor that attorney general Eric Holder had authorized a drone strike on Bundy Ranch, was in fact a “psy-op” meant to discredit the protestors gathered there. Because they haven’t discredited themselves enough.
- Speaking of Bundy Ranch, “militia” leader Mike Vanderboegh warned of “civil war on a vast scale, and promised that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will have his “balls ripped off.”
- Concerned about the possibility of same-sex marriage in South Dakota, Republican state Rep. Steve Hickey penned a letter to the editor, asking that health experts weigh in on anal sex, because “gay sex is not good for the body or mind,” and “we are talking about a one-way alley meant only for the garbage truck to go down.”
- Speaking of South Dakota, Republican Senate candidate Dr. Annette Bosworth shared a viral image on her personal Facebook page that compared food stamp recipients with wild animals.
- Utah Republican state Rep. Dave Lifferth tweeted, “We should have known Don Sterling was a racist when he gave money to the National Association for Advancement of Colored People.”
- In a speech before an audience gathered to celebrate the National Day of Prayer, religious right-winger James Dobson referred to President Obama as “the abortion president,” and dared the president to “come and get [him].”
- Rep. Louie Gohmert (R, Texas) warned that Sec. of State John Kerry resign before he brings “God’s judgement” on the U.S., because he has “effectively cursed Israel.”
- Meanwhile, GOP congressional candidate and Wisconsin state senator Glenn Grothman said that Kerry angered God by condemning Uganda’s anti-gay crackdown.
- Sarah Palin told the audience at a National Rifle Association rally that if she were in charge America’s enemies would know that, “Waterboarding is how we baptize terrorists.” No mention as to why she still not “in charge.”
- Remember Rep. Michael Grimm (R, New York), who threatened to throw a reporter off a balcony for asking about campaign finance allegations? Well, Grimm was indicted on 20 counts of fraud (including federal mail, wire, and tax), promptly stepped down from the House Financial Services Committee, turned himself in, and was taken into custody.
