Before she became the first female Labor secretary in 1933, Frances Perkins had seen firsthand the tragedy of Manhattan’s 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist fire. Locked in by their employer, 146 mostly young girls died when they couldn’t escape the burning building where they toiled in sweatshop labor. Later, as the New York industrial commissioner, Perkins held employers accountable for workplace safety and health, expanding factory investigations and championing other pro-worker laws, like unemployment insurance.

washingtonpost.com — The Bush administration stepped up its attempt to build support for restructuring Social Security, saying in a Treasury Department report that the popular program will require either tax increases or cuts in benefits to remain viable in its current form.
There has been an effort by the enemies of Social Security and Medicare to demonize the baby boomers as a threat to country’s prosperity and the well-being of our children and grandchildren. The way to deal with scary long-term budget projections is to fix our health care system, not to gut Social Security and Medicare.
