The blue line in the graph represents the number of workers on payrolls from January 2004 through December 2009.

The rose-colored line represents the number of jobs that would be needed to sustain the level of employment the nation had on December 2007, the last month of increases in the number of employed workers before the start of the financial meltdown. That line is based on the expected growth of the working-age population from December 2007 through December 2012.
